Building a business.
Hello. If anyone is thinking of selling their wares at a craft fair, village fete, or agricultural show, this is me at my Mr Puss stand which I took around the country to mainly cat shows, and other events.
It's not enough to put a cloth on a six foot table, and lay your goods out on that. To create an impact you need to add height. I built a step frame for the mugs and small ornaments, and covered it in red velvet. You also need something to hang things on. I transported my stock in those stackable plastic boxes, and used them at the back of my pitch to support two poles which I attached cross bars to, with heavy duty clips and D clamps. Perfect for clothing and bags. If you have electricity take a couple of small directional lamps.
A six foot table is not really big enough. You can put some boxes at the front, cover them with a cloth and put stock out there. If there is plenty of room either side you could take a small table and place it at the side, but don't upset the person next to you by encroaching on their space. If you are alone you need to make friends with your neighbour in case you need to go to the toilet for a few minutes. Can you watch my stall while I go to the ladies.
If you are selling small high value items try not to place them too near the front of the table. Keep them further back so you can keep your eye on them.
This was my weekend job when I was a self employed lorry driver. It was a business so I had an accountant. I enjoyed it. Nothing was handmade, everything was bought in from wholesalers. During busy times I was working seven days a week. It all had to stop when sales were dropping due to people not having any spare money. The cost of the pitch was more than my takings were. You can't run a business like that. At least I still had an income from the driving.
If you fancy doing something like this give it a try, though it probably isn't the right time at the moment.
It's been a lovely day in the garden today. Let's hope we get more sunshine.
Thanks for popping in. Toodle pip. ilona
